Core Modules
Our modular curriculum allows for a tailored experience for each of our Opportunity Youth.
Mentorship Module
Our mentorship module has five objectives for Opportunity Youth:
Explain the idea of mentorship to them.
Promote their social and self-awareness, empowerment and self-respect
Establish their personal goals
Develop their problem-solving skills
Foster their conflict resolution skills.
This module has four units, each explored over 3 months:
Unit A: We will examine the basics of pairing mentors with mentees, ideal qualities and guiding ethical principles for mentoring youth. We will also explore some of the obstacles that are encountered when trying to initiate effective mentorship
Unit B: We will cover self and social awareness, with the goal of understanding and establishing one's worth and utility within their community. Further, we will cover the factors that contribute to their sense of self, assess their current views, and redirect negativity
Unit C: We will help the mentees take the initial steps towards taking responsibility for their futures. We will discuss each mentee's actual desires and goals and help them chart a path to reach their goals.
Unit D: We will solidify the mentor-mentee relationship to seek fulfillment of the goals outlined by the mentee, seeking to unify the previously outlined principles and utilize them on an ongoing basis to provide the mentee with continued support and guidance
Health and Wellness Module
Our Health and Wellness Module will cover the following topics:
The Fundamentals of Health and Wellness
Self-Discovery and Self-Care
Holistic Health
Learning how to make healthy choices in daily life
This module has four units, each explored over 3 months:
Unit A: This unit is designed to introduce Opportunity Youth to the basics of health and wellness, integrative nutrition, and holistic health. Covering the basic terms and ideas will provide a base for the next units.
Unit B: This unit will aid the mentees with the process of discovery of self, examining the factors that contribute toward self-care, building healthy habits, and developing holistic relationships: relationships with family, friends, and food.
Unit C: This unit will explore the aspects of having a balanced life, delving deeper into elements of proper nutrition, exercise, mental health, and spiritual health. Also, we will examine how to effectively manage stress and anxiety.
Unit D: This unit will help the mentees create a plan for health and wellness in their daily lives, effectively enacting the principles learned to create a balanced life.
Mental and Behavioral Health Module
This module aims to provide top-level content to address core areas of mental and behavioral health, with objectives of:
Realizing self and social awareness and using this to shape individual circumstances.
Gaining encouragement from peers and and mentors to develop the self respect to enact change for their own future.
Establishing personal goals, both short and long term.
Learning to develop and hone problem solving skills.
Fostering conflict resolution skills.
The module consists of four units, each covered over 3 months:
Sleep - The mentees will learn about the importance of proper sleep and overcoming sleep disturbances.
Attention/Self Control - This section aims to teach mentees best practices to improve attention and Self-Control
Learning Impairment - This section will highlight the signs of learning impairment and strategies for addressing and managing them.
Self-Medication - The Mentees will learn about the signs of self-medicating as a coping mechanism and the steps to overcome this challenge.
Self-Worth - This section will uncover the concept of self-worth and guide the mentees though recognizing the influence it has in their lives.
Bullying - The mentees will learn the different types of bullying in order to recognize and take steps to stop these behaviors for both victims and perpetrators of bullying.
Emotion Management - This section will highlight anxiety, depression and the tools necessary to understand emotional management
Navigating Differences - The mentees will learn about the concepts of Gender Identity, Gender Expression, Biological Sex, and Sexual Orientation and how they relate to language and one’s self-perceptions.
Adjustment - The mentee will be guided through navigating social, personal, and societal changes in their lives and making changes to successfully navigate these changes in their life.
Self-Harm Prevention - The mentees will learn about the signs and symptoms of self-harm and will discuss the appropriate steps to manage and prevent self-harm for themselves or others.
*This module is no substitute for an actual psychology class, psychotherapy treatment, or group counseling experience.
